Clinical Support for Services
Laboratory
The Wilkes County Health Department Lab provides testing in all areas of patient care and communicable disease control: blood
tests, urine tests and screening tests for certain diseases. There are some tests that cannot be performed on site. However,
contracts with local and state labs allow the Health Department Lab to collect samples and prepare them for testing off site,
such as HIV tests, pap smears and water testing for Environmental Health. The results are sent back to Wilkes County Health
Department Lab as soon as they are available.
Wilkes County Health Department’s lab is staffed by two nationally certified phlebotomists. All lab staff members are certified
through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and it is nationally certified by Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Amendment (CLIA). The laboratory undergoes an inspection by CLIA every two years as a high complexity laboratory and has
been re-certified each time with no deficiencies or recommendations. The laboratory is enrolled in a proficiency program, through
the College of American Pathologist (CAP), which is federally mandated by CLIA. The proficiency testing results are always
successful and have an average rating of 90 to 100%. The lab proudly displays the certificates received from CLIA and CAP.
Pharmacy
The Wilkes County Health Department pharmacy only fills prescriptions written by its employees. The medicines stocked are
for routine childhood and
adult illnesses,
vaccinations (shots) and
prescription methods of birth control. Some medicines
for patients seen at Wilkes County Health Department may be filled through the
Care Connection Pharmacy at
Wilkes Regional Medical Center. For more information on the Health Department’s pharmacy services call 651-7450.
Central Piedmont Access II
The Wilkes County Health Department Medicaid Case Manager helps Medicaid-covered children, teenagers and adults
who have been hospitalized or treated at the emergency department. This registered nurse contacts these Medicaid-insured
patients to help them take better advantage of the preventive, well and sick care they can receive at non-emergency settings.
The nurse also specifically works with patients who have asthma, diabetes or congestive heart failure to help them with
controlling their conditions so that they don’t reach a point where they need to seek emergency care. If you have Medicaid
you may be eligible for Central Piedmont Access II. The services include:
