Sick Care

For Children

Wilkes County Health Department provides children birth through age 21 with complete care. The Health Department will see children for well check visits (regular health care check-ups and screenings) and for sick visits if they do not have a doctor. Patients receive physical exams, developmental screening and education, laboratory services, immunizations, treatment or medicines when needed and referral when necessary. Wilkes County Health Department also offers Central Piedmont Access II management for those who are Medicaid eligible. For more information, please call 651-7450.


For Adolescents

Wilkes County Health Department provides complete health care for Wilkes County teenagers. The Health Department will see teens for well check visits (regular health care check-ups and screenings) and for sick visits if they do not have a doctor. Patients can receive physical exams, laboratory services, immunizations, medications and referral when necessary. Wilkes County Health Department also offers Central Piedmont Access II management for those who are Medicaid eligible. Services for teenagers are confidential; however, teenagers are encouraged to discuss their health needs with their parents or guardians.

In addition, Wilkes County Health Department provides care for high school teenagers at each high school for one day each week on the MESH Unit (Mobile Expanded School Health). Screenings, referrals, physicals and age-appropriate education are provided and services are coordinated with the school nurses. For more information, please call 651-7450.


For Adults

Wilkes County Health Department provides adults of any age sick or well care. The Health Department will see adults for well check visits (screenings) and for sick visits if you do not have a doctor. Well check exams may include checking cardiovascular health, running tests on blood for healthy sugar, cholesterol or prostate specific antigen levels; screening for breast, cervical, skin, mouth, colon or testicular cancers. Booster immunizations may be given at this time. Wilkes County Health Department can provide health counseling, nutrition support and some limited diagnostic tests if abnormal results are found during screenings. Patients may be referred for more specialized when referrals become necessary. Many medications can be arranged at a financial discount through the Care Connection Pharmacy, a program supported by Wilkes Community Health Council, located at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Wilkes County Health Department also offers Central Piedmont Access II management for those who are Medicaid eligible.

In addition, Wilkes County Health Department provides more comprehensive one-on-one supportive care for adults with chronic conditions through our other clinics such as nutrition education through out adult health program, breastfeeding support through our maternity clinic, or tobacco cessation through our Health Promotion section.
