Medical Nutrition Therapy
Individuals with a variety of conditions and illnesses can improve their health and quality of life by receiving medical nutrition therapy (MNT). During an MNT intervention, Registered Dietitians counsel clients on behavioral and lifestyle changes required to impact long-term eating habits and health.
MNT can only be provided by a Registered Dietitian. Wilkes County Health Department offers this service.
You may qualify for MNT services if you have concerns regarding one or more of the following:
- Diabetes – Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Heart disease – High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Congestive Heart Failure
- Weight Management – Overweight/obesity, Bariatric Surgery, Eating disorders
- Women’s Health
- Food Allergies
- Childhood weight management
- Gastrointestinal Disorders – Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease
- Disease Prevention

Diabetes Self Management Education
Want to learn how you can enjoy pasta, rice, fruit, potatoes, and even birthday cake without consequences? Wilkes County Health Department has a program just for you!

Our program has four main components:
1. One on One session with a Nurse. This includes information on:
- Insulin and medications
- Checking blood sugars
- Complications/reducing your risk
- How to cope on sick days
- Signs of low blood sugar
- Exercise…and more!
2. One on One session with a Dietitian. You will hear about:
- Good fats and bad fats
- Carbohydrate counting
- Cholesterol and blood pressure improvement
- Fiber
- Getting to a healthy weight
- Reading food labels…and more!
3. Diabetes Class. You’ll learn about:
- How to fit all foods into your diet (that’s right, even birthday cake)!
- Exercise
- Monitoring blood sugars
- Managing stress and the effects of stress on blood sugar
- Goal setting, problem solving….and more!
4. Follow up
- Additional sessions with the Dietitian
- We also offer “Defy Diabetes” a monthly support group free of charge.

Do you need a crash course in Diabetes? What about a refresher course? Are you a newly diagnosed diabetic? Do you have problems controlling your blood sugar? Do you have tingling or numbness in your extremities? Do you have questions that you want answered? No you need help making healthy food choices or managing your weight? If so Wilkes County Health Department has just the group for you... Defy Diabetes. We meet monthly, on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:00pm at Wilkes Regional Medical Center, in the large conference room.
